Behind every independent business is a story—of vision, perseverance, craftsmanship, risk, and a commitment to serving others. Local Legends is my invitation to step inside some of the Charlotte-area businesses that help give our community its character and texture. Some have been part of Charlotte's landscape for generations; others are newer ventures bringing fresh energy, creativity, and ideas to our city. What they share is a willingness to build something of their own and make it matter.
This is not simply a collection of photographs. It is a celebration of the people, passion, and purpose behind these businesses. Through photography and storytelling, I hope to reveal the spaces they have created, the details of their craft, and the personalities that make each business unique.
The entrepreneurial spirit has always been one of the foundations of American life. These businesses represent that spirit in action. It is my privilege to meet the people behind them, listen to their stories, and share a glimpse of what makes each one worth discovering.

Bruce Julian Clothier
In the quiet rhythm of a Southern town, where the scent of pipe tobacco and freshly pressed wool once mingled with the chatter of students and professors, a story began in 1948.
Milton Julian opened the doors of Milton’s Clothing Cupboard on West Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. Itwas not merely a shop. It was a place where a man learned that clothing could be both armor and expression—where an Oxford-cloth shirt, a well-cut pair of khakis, and a thoughtfully chosen sport coat said something true about the man who wore them. Milton believed in quality that endured, service that felt personal, and style that never shouted. For more than four decades his store stood as one of North Carolina’s most respected family-run men’s clothiers, a quiet landmark of good taste and genuine care.
That same quiet conviction lives on today, more than seventy years later, in Charlotte. Bruce Julian, Milton’s son, carries the torch at Bruce Julian Clothier. The name has changed, the address has moved, yet the heart remains unchanged. The same insistence on fine fabrics, honest value, and a shopping experience that feels more like a conversation than a transaction still defines every visit. Walk through the door and you may hear music spinning on Bruce’s classic record player, catch the gleam of his antique toy collection, or accept a well-made Bloody Mary from the bar. These are not gimmicks. They are the natural extensions of a family tradition that has always believed a men’s store should feel like a second living room—welcoming, unhurried, and quietly excellent.
From Milton’s first days in Chapel Hill to Bruce’s continuation in Charlotte, the story has never been about chasing trends. It has been about preserving something rarer: the knowledge that true style is patient, personal, and passed down. The suits, sport coats, shirts, and trousers you find here are chosen with the same discerning eye that guided Milton three-quarters of a century ago. The service is still warm. The value is still real. And the legacy—of craftsmanship, of character, of a father who taught his son that a well-dressed man is simply a man who pays attention—continues, as alive today as it was in 1948.

Where a Haircut Feels Like Coming Home
A few weeks ago, I walked into Modern Classics Barbershop in South End Charlotte and met Jake Boyle. Like most men, I have spent years cycling through barbershops and salons in search of something simple yet strangely elusive: a reliable, professional cut that leaves you looking sharp and feeling like yourself. Women often understand instinctively how much a great haircut shapes both how the world sees them and how they see themselves. Many men settle for the nearest national franchise and hope for the best. My own results over the years have been mixed at best.
During a short chapter in Atlanta, I was fortunate to have a family member who had been cutting and styling hair for decades. She knew exactly what to do. When I moved to Charlotte, that certainty disappeared. I experimented—sometimes with genuinely horrifying results—before deciding it was time to stop settling for the merely utilitarian and find someone who possessed the skill and care the job requires.
Jake was that someone. Even while juggling multiple clients and keeping a quiet eye on his team, he was immediately receptive and fully present. Two weeks later, during a photo session that was supposed to last about an hour, I stayed far longer. What held me there was not only the craft on display—precise fades, classic razor shaves, thoughtful men’s styling—but the unmistakable sense of unity among the barbers. Some carried tattoos, others a more conservative look, yet together they moved with the easy coordination of people who trust one another completely.
One of the barbers put it simply: walking through the door each morning doesn’t feel like going to work. It feels like visiting friends. That is rarer than it should be. In an industry built on appointments and transactions, Modern Classics has created something closer to a gathering place. The shared goal is straightforward and quietly profound: make every guest feel comfortable, do the best work possible, and send them out looking and feeling better than when they arrived.
Jake, originally from Pennsylvania, is both a skilled barber and a competent business owner. What stays with you, though, is the kind of man he is. His stated aim is simple—to make sure everyone who walks through the door feels accepted and welcomed. After spending time with him, it is clear this is not polite conversation. It is the operating principle of the shop, embodied by a joyful and genuinely kind soul who sets the tone for everyone around him.
A great haircut is the baseline expectation. NC Guitar Works

After returning to Charlotte in 2025, I needed a skilled luthier to properly set up one of my guitars. For experienced players, a full setup — fresh strings, action adjustment, truss rod work, and precise intonation — makes all the difference between a guitar that fights you and one that sings.
Online research quickly led me to NC Guitar Works. Owner Nick Plesz answered my call personally — straightforward, polite, and clearly knowledgeable. The next day I dropped off my Fender Stratocaster. Less than three days later I picked it up completely transformed. The action was smooth and comfortable, eliminating the tightness typical of Fender’s longer scale length. It played effortlessly, which matters greatly for players over 40 who want to avoid hand fatigue.
Impressed by the results and fast turnaround, I later brought in two Taylor acoustics. Both times, Nick and his team delivered the same high-quality work in under three days — much quicker than the one-to-three weeks common at many other shops. After 20 years in business, NC Guitar Works isn’t a part-time or fluctuating operation. It’s a busy, well-respected workshop because they treat every instrument with care, whether it’s a simple setup or complex repair.
What visitors quickly notice is that this is a real working workshop, not a polished showroom — and that’s exactly what serious players are looking for. Tools, parts, and instruments in progress create an honest, no-frills environment where craftsmanship happens.
Nick’s path explains a lot. Originally from Pennsylvania, he moved to Charlotte nearly 30 years ago to help his brothers in construction and ended up building his life here. The son of a craftsman, Nick excelled in shop class (to the point where classmates paid him to finish their projects). That hands-on foundation serves him well today.
Beyond repairs, Nick is a working musician who plays in the band Ultralush. This dual perspective — builder and player — gives him unique insight into what musicians actually need. I’ve seen his work firsthand, including a Gibson Les Paul headstock repair so seamless it looked factory original.
In a world where big-box stores often rely on sales-floor techs with limited experience, trusting a high-end or even mid-range guitar to inexperienced hands can be risky. Nick’s meticulous approach protects both playability and resale value. My own recently sold Stratocaster fetched the price I wanted largely because of how well it had been maintained.

A few days later, I reached out to Brad (as he warmly prefers), and we scheduled a relaxed photo session at his shop. What was meant to be a quick visit turned into a rich conversation about his passion for custom men’s clothing. OMJ specializes in high-quality casual wear and expertly tailored suits and formal attire—perfect for weddings, special events, or everyday elegance. Brad works with an impressive selection of premium fabrics sourced from around the world, customizing each piece to fit his clients’ exact needs, style, and measurements.
With a background in finance and years in the corporate world, Brad brings analytical precision and genuine care to every garment. His attention to detail and commitment to client satisfaction are evident in everything he does. He won’t rest until a client feels confident and perfectly dressed. Beyond the clothing, Brad’s approach to business stands out. We bonded over our shared philosophy: the most important part of any transaction is how customers feel before, during, and long after the sale. A few years ago, he founded a members-only Whiskey Club that strengthens relationships with loyal clients while supporting other local businesses—an inspired way to build community.
In just 13 years, Brad has created something truly special through his gentle demeanor, strong work ethic, and unwavering focus on excellence. I left the session impressed not only by the quality of the clothing but by the thoughtful experience OMJ delivers.
